The practice
Dr Johan Blignaut, Specialist Surgeon, has run a vein-only practice since 2013. The practice has three centres: Umhlanga in Durban, Fourways in Johannesburg and Somerset West near Cape Town. Each has its own office operating rooms, so assessment, duplex ultrasound and treatment under local anaesthetic all happen in the same place, without hospital admission.
Every new patient has a duplex ultrasound scan of both legs before treatment is recommended, because vein problems cannot be judged reliably from what is visible on the skin. Dr Blignaut is appointed by Medtronic as a proctor to train surgeons from South Africa, elsewhere in Africa and the Middle East in endovenous radiofrequency ablation; he receives no payment from Medtronic.
