How vein treatment is paid for
Many medical scheme options fund treatment of symptomatic varicose veins, at least in part. What your scheme pays depends on your option, the clinical findings on your duplex scan and the scheme’s authorisation rules, so we confirm your benefits before any procedure. In outline:
- The consultation and duplex scan are paid on the day, and you claim them from your scheme’s day-to-day benefits.
- Radiofrequency ablation is usually paid from your hospital benefit, depending on your scheme and option, even though it is done in our rooms. So members on a hospital plan can often claim.
- Uncomplicated varicose veins are not a Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB); some complications, such as deep vein thrombosis, are.
- Some network options pay for specialist care only with a GP referral (for example some GEMS, Bonitas BonCap and Discovery KeyCare options). Check your option before you book.
- We send the authorisation request to your scheme for you, and you have a written estimate before your procedure.
Treatment is done in our own rooms under local anaesthetic, so there is no hospital admission fee, theatre fee or anaesthetist’s account. Our actual fees, what each includes, gap cover and the authorisation steps are on the fees and medical aid page.
