Conflict-of-interest statement

Last updated October 2026

Why we publish this statement

Patients and referring doctors should be able to judge whether anything other than their care could influence what we recommend or write. This statement sets out Dr Blignaut’s relationships with companies whose products are used in vein treatment.

Medtronic

Dr Johan Blignaut is appointed by Medtronic as a proctor. In that role he trains surgeons from South Africa, elsewhere in Africa and the Middle East in endovenous radiofrequency ablation. Medtronic makes devices used in two of the treatments described on this website: radiofrequency ablation and medical adhesive (glue) closure.

Dr Blignaut receives no payment of any kind from Medtronic: no fees, travel, expenses or other benefits.

Other companies

Dr Blignaut is a medical advisor to Kirsion Medical (Pty) Ltd, a medical device distribution company.

The compression stockings we supply are generic stockings; we have no relationship with any stocking manufacturer.

How we manage these relationships

  • Treatment is chosen according to the findings of your duplex ultrasound scan and your preferences, not the device maker.
  • Treatment pages use the generic name of each procedure. Where a brand is mentioned, it is mentioned once, as a fact.
  • Our patient information does not claim that one device is better than another unless a published study is cited.
  • Our content for doctors carries the same disclosure.
