Clinical tool for health professionals

CEAP 2020 classifier

Tick what you find for one leg. The tool builds the basic CEAP code as you go, and the advanced code once you add the duplex findings. Photographs are of patients at our centres, published with their consent.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is stored or sent. Decision support only: it does not replace clinical judgement.

C: clinical class

Tick every class present in this leg. Basic CEAP reports the highest class; advanced CEAP lists them all.

E: aetiology
Duplex findings

A: anatomy

P: pathophysiology

About CEAP 2020

  • CEAP classifies chronic venous disease by Clinical signs, Etiology, Anatomy and Pathophysiology. Classify each leg separately.
  • The 2020 revision added C4c (corona phlebectatica), the “r” modifier for recurrent varicose veins (C2r) and recurrent active ulcers (C6r), split secondary aetiology into intravenous (Esi) and extravenous (Ese), and replaced the numbered anatomic segments with abbreviations.
  • CEAP describes the disease; it does not measure change with treatment. Record the revised VCSS as well.
  • A and P need a duplex scan. Every new patient at our centres has one at the first visit, and we include the full CEAP code in our letter to you.
